Changing the case of text one letter at a time is slow and easy to get wrong. A text case converter can turn a paragraph into uppercase, lowercase, sentence case, Title Case, or a developer-friendly format such as snake_case in seconds.
Use the Text Case & Reformatter to type or paste text and see a reformatted result as you work. Sentence starts are capitalized automatically by default; select a case action when you need a different format. This guide explains what each text case means, how to choose one, and what to review before using the result.
Text case quick guide
| Format | Example | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| Sentence case | A quick guide to text formatting. | Sentences, descriptions, and readable paragraphs |
| lowercase | a quick guide to text formatting. | Email addresses, tags, and normalized text |
| UPPERCASE | A QUICK GUIDE TO TEXT FORMATTING. | Short labels, headings, or codes that require capitals |
| Title Case | A Quick Guide To Text Formatting | Titles and headings when that style is required |
| snake_case | a_quick_guide_to_text_formatting | Variable names and identifiers in some codebases |
These formats are not interchangeable. Choose the one expected by the destination, style guide, or programming language.
How to change text case online
- Open the online text case converter.
- Paste or type the text in the input box. The output updates as you type, with sentence starts capitalized automatically.
- Select lowercase, UPPERCASE, Title Case, or snake_case if you need that specific format. Select the active case button again to turn it off and return to automatic sentence capitalization.
- Use optional actions to clean whitespace, remove duplicate lines, sort lines, or number them.
- Review the output, then choose Copy or Download .txt.
The text reformatter also includes Find & Replace for repeated edits. You can combine the available line actions, so check the final result before using it in a document or codebase.
Sentence case vs. Title Case
Sentence case is designed for normal prose: capitalize the beginning of a sentence and leave the rest of the words alone. In this tool, sentence-start capitalization and the standalone pronoun “I” are applied automatically unless another case action is selected.
Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each word. For example, a guide to changing text case becomes A Guide To Changing Text Case. Different editorial style guides treat short words such as “to,” “and,” or “of” differently, so adjust headings to match the style you need.
Automatic formatting cannot reliably know whether a word is a proper noun, brand name, acronym, or product-specific spelling. For example, sentence case will not infer that a name typed in lowercase should be capitalized. Proofread names and acronyms after using a case changer.
When to use uppercase or lowercase
Use uppercase text when a form, specification, or short label explicitly requires capital letters. Avoid converting long passages to all caps unless required; it can be harder to read and may not match the destination's style.
Use lowercase text to normalize values such as tags or text fields that are intended to be case-insensitive. Lowercasing can change acronyms and names, so check terms like API, HTML, and company names before publishing or sharing.
Convert text to snake_case
snake_case replaces word boundaries with underscores and uses lowercase letters, such as User Profile Name → user_profile_name. It is useful where a programming convention expects lowercase identifiers separated by underscores.
Naming rules differ across languages and projects. Check for reserved words, punctuation, leading digits, and required identifier conventions before pasting a converted name into source code. A case converter changes formatting; it does not validate whether an identifier is allowed.
Clean up lines and whitespace
The reformatter can also help prepare lists and pasted text:
- Clean Whitespace trims spaces at the start and end of each line and collapses repeated spaces or tabs within a line. Blank lines are preserved.
- Remove Duplicates removes repeated lines while keeping the first occurrence.
- Sort A-Z / Sort Z-A reorders lines alphabetically.
- Number Lines adds a sequence number to each line.
- Find & Replace replaces each occurrence of the text you specify.
Review lists after sorting or de-duplication: line order can carry meaning, and two lines that look similar may not be duplicates if their punctuation or spacing differs.
Is an online text case converter private?
The Text Case & Reformatter performs supported text transformations in browser-side code rather than sending the text to a PDFtools4u processing server. The website still loads scripts and other assets and may make analytics requests. That means local text processing should not be confused with a guarantee that the entire website makes no network requests. Review the Privacy Policy, and avoid entering confidential text if the site's data practices do not meet your needs.
Frequently asked questions
How can I convert uppercase text to lowercase?
Paste the text into the text reformatter and select lowercase. Check the output for names, acronyms, and terms that should retain capital letters.
Does sentence case capitalize every word?
No. Sentence case capitalizes sentence starts, while Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each word. Use Title Case for headings only when it matches your chosen style.
Will automatic capitalization fix names and acronyms?
No. The tool can capitalize sentence starts and the standalone pronoun “I,” but it cannot determine every proper noun or preferred acronym spelling. Review these manually.
Can I change the case of multiple lines at once?
Yes. Paste multiple lines into the input and select the desired case action. The tool applies the case conversion to the text while keeping line breaks available for the other line-formatting actions.
Can I copy or download the converted text?
Yes. Use Copy to copy the output to your clipboard or Download .txt to save it as a text file.
